What to Include on a Club’s Listserve

According to a recent survey in our club, most members want their Listserv or similar program to convey information about club activities and to organize social events -- but not to chat with other members. Therefore, our club’s board of directors has established a second Listserv to serve as a chat room among members while establishing the following rules for our main Listserv:

1. Postings should stick to club-related activities or sports-related activities. While members may use the service to advertise sports equipment, the list is NOT to be used to for selling non-sports-related items with the exception of tickets to major events.

2. Members may post group activities that they are organizing as well as social activities which they are hosting and which are open to the entire membership. We ask that they give details of the event (date, time, place, cost, etc.) and note that it is not an official club function.

3. Please give a simple, clear subject line on your posting. This makes it easier for members to skip a message if they’re not interested. All postings will automatically carry the club’s byline in the heading.

4. Due to concerns about computer viruses, the club does not allow attachments of any kind. If appropriate, postings can state that the sender will send the file upon request.

5. Do not submit any form of spam.

6. All “news you can use” related to skiing is allowed in the postings -- including information about non-club ski trips -- if they do not conflict with our own trips. These would include ski shop sales, season pass deals, first-hand accounts of ski conditions, and requests for information about ski areas. Please do not post advertising about ski resorts or shops other than sales.

7. Reminders about upcoming club events will be limited to one per week. Exceptions to this rule will be made for events that are not filling up and which expose the club to financial loss.

8. If any member feels that a posting is inappropriate for any reason, he should direct his comments to the moderator, rather than to the sender of the original posting and, above all, not to all recipients. The moderator’s job is to interpret and enforce the Listserve usage policy and member feedback helps shape that policy.
