Steamboat Installs Wind-Powered Chairlift

Steamboat is installing a new $1.3 million fixed-grip triple chairlift to replace the Burgess Creek double chairlift. It will be the first new lift at Steamboat since the Pony Express Quad was installed for the 1998/99 season.

The new lift will feature footrests for riders and increase uphill capacity by 64%, reducing pressure on the Elkhead lift. As part of its long-standing commitment to the environment, Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation will utilize alternative energy, in the form of wind power, to run the new Burgess Creek lift.

Doug Allen, senior director of mountain operations was quoted as saying, “(we) are very excited about the ... fact that this lift will be powered by electricity generated by wind -- the worlds fastest-growing and cost effective renewable energy sources.”
